Sebastian Hoenen Research Prize

In memory of Sebastian Hoenen

The SEI Consortium is proud to announce the 2023 Sebastian Hoenen Research Prize. The prize seeks to recognize early career scholars working at the forefront of strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship who have conducted adventurous, creative, and rigorous research. Nominations are open to graduates of European institutions within five years since the completion of their thesis.

The prize is named in memory of Sebastian Joseph Hoenen, who passed away on March 31, 2019 at age 31. Before his illness, Sebastian had started his post-doctoral studies at Rotterdam School of Management, following the completion of his doctoral degree in management studies at Wageningen University. During his doctoral studies, Sebastian visited Bocconi and the University of Bath. He presented his formative work at the SEI conference in ETH in 2016, and his research appeared in Industrial and Corporate Change, Organization Science, Research Policy, and Review of Economics and Statistics.

The prize is accompanied by a 1000 EURO award, provided generously by his surviving family and by former colleagues, collaborators, and employers.

Candidates for the award:

  • Must be a doctoral graduate of a European institution (including those in countries outside the European Union).

  • Graduated or submitted their thesis after January 2019.

  • Make a personal nomination for consideration for the award.

The candidates will be assessed on scientific merit alone. Normally, the prize will be awarded to a single individual, although individuals may have published in teams. Applications will be assessed based on their (formative) track record in conducting research that is original, significant, and rigorous. Particular attention will be placed on the ability to generate new insights and understanding, and on using new data and methods.

Applicants must submit an application to the Prize Committee chair, Christos Kolympiris, at Christos.Kolympiris@wbs.ac.uk, by July 15, 2023. The heading of the email submitting the application should be titled “2023 Sebastian Hoenen prize application”. The application must include: 1) a 2 max page academic CV, 2) a research statement of a maximum of 500 words, 3) a commitment to attend SEI 2023, and 4) up to three nominated outputs (unpublished manuscripts or published papers) for consideration. All documents should be in PDF.

The prize will be awarded during SEI 2023 at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, which will run from the 14th to 16th  of September 2023 at the University of Warwick campus.

The award committee is composed of:

Thomas Astebro (HEC), Stefano Brusoni (ETH), Paola Criscuolo (Imperial), Peter G. Klein (Baylor), Christos Kolympiris (Warwick, Chair), Taco Reus (RSM), Ammon Salter (Warwick), Orietta Marsili (Bristol), and Valentina Tartari (CBS).

Faculty Workshop

Paper submission deadline: June 1st, 2023

We would like to invite paper submissions for the annual European Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (SEI) Faculty Workshop to be held on Thursday, September 14th – Saturday, September 16th, at Warwick Business School. The small-scale workshop builds upon the success of previous SEI Faculty Workshops and aims to provide a forum for in-depth discussion to scholars in the fields of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and/or Innovation that are in the process of preparing high-potential manuscripts for submission to top journals. Junior faculty (e.g., assistant professors, tenure trackers) will receive priority and are especially encouraged to submit their work. The workshop will start on Thursday, September 14th, at 12.30 and end on Saturday, September 16th, at 13.00. The Faculty Workshop will take place alongside the Doctoral Consortium, constituting a single event.

Each paper will have about 45 minutes for presentation and discussion. All participants are expected to read the papers and contribute to the discussion. The submitted papers should contribute to one or more of the following broad areas: strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Since the aim of this developmental workshop is to help prepare articles for submission to top journals, papers must not be already accepted, or close to being accepted.

The deadline for the submission of papers is June 1st, 2023. Please use the link below to submit your paper. Please submit your paper with names and affiliations on the first page, separate from the paper itself. A selection committee will blind-review and rank all papers given the selection criteria. The top-scoring papers will be selected for inclusion in the program. No feedback will be provided at this stage. Priority will be given to junior faculty members (e.g., assistant professors and tenure trackers) and those who have not presented at the SEI before. All participants are expected to be based in Europe. We aim to inform authors of accepted papers by mid-July.

The hosting institution will reimburse the cost of transportation, such as flights (economy) and arrange the accommodation (two nights stay) for all the presenters. There is no registration fee for the workshop.

The submission window is now closed. We aim to inform authors of accepted papers by mid-July 2023.

Doctoral Consortium

Student nomination deadline: June 1st, 2023

We invite nominations from faculty at business schools in Europe for their doctoral students to participate in the SEI Doctoral Consortium to be held on Thursday, September 14th – Saturday, September 16th, at Warwick Business School. The consortium seeks to bring together a select group of doctoral students doing research in the areas of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and/or Innovation. The workshop will start on Thursday, September 14th, at 12.30 and end on Saturday, September 16th, at 13.00.

The SEI Doctoral Consortium provides doctoral students at universities in Europe with a unique opportunity to present their dissertation-stage research to and receive developmental feedback from leading strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship scholars, including the editors of many of the top journals in the field. Ample informal mentoring and networking opportunities will be provided outside the formal student presentations, including coffee breaks, lunches, and dinners.

Nominations should be made by a faculty member (rather than the student) and should be coordinated at the institution level. The deadline for nominating students is June 1st, 2023. Since the consortium is designed to help students develop their research, we prefer nominees whose research is beyond the thesis proposal stage. A selection committee will evaluate all nominees, and only a select group of Ph.D. students will be invited to attend. Priority will be given to students who have not presented at a previous SEI consortium and students whose thesis advisor commits to participate in the event. All participants are expected to be based in Europe. Please use the link below to nominate a student. We strive for diversity in institutions, participants, and research topics. We strive for diversity in institutions, participants, and research topics. We aim to inform accepted Ph.D. students by mid-July 2023.

The hosting institution will reimburse the cost of transportation, such as flights (economy), and arrange the accommodation (two nights stay) for all invited Ph.D. students. There is no registration fee for the workshop.

The submission window is now closed. We aim to inform accepted Ph.D. students by mid-July 2023.
